Killoughteen NS pupils 3rd to 5th went to Curraghchase during the month of April. We have 4 mentors, Rachel, Aga and 2 others. There were three categories taught on the day. We learnt about the life cycle of trees, how to tell the age of a tree without harming the tree.

We got a measuring tape, the start of the tape went to the base of the tree, held the tape vertical against the tree up to 150cm. Then keep your finger on this 150cm spot. Then measure the tree circumference of the tree at this height. When found, divide it by 2.5 and hey presto you could get the age of the tree. We had a competition to find the oldest tree, and the oldest one found was 80 years by our group.

We also made wood necklaces…
