This year, our school applied for another Green Flag. Our theme this time was ‘energy conservation’. We had a big challenge ahead of us this year, and everybody worked hard to reduce our energy use. We established a Green School committee, with one child from each class from first to sixth class. Our committee members were Alice McKernan, Jack Horgan, Cagla Saracolgu, Aoibheann McDonnell, Rory Harrington, Sinead Brosnan, Amy Curtin and John Whelan.
We had lots of meetings with our co-ordinator Mrs O’ Grady. We checked our school’s oil tank level and electricity meter regularly to see how much energy we were using. We tried to lessen this each time. We spoke to all the classes in the school, and did regular spot checks on the rooms, to see if the lights and electric whiteboards were turned off at lunch time, and the doors were kept closed. We created a Green Code for our school to encourage conserving energy. This was ‘Do the earth a favour, be a power saver’. Each class also created their own ‘energy pledge’ to use less energy in different ways within their classrooms.
We received a visit from the Green Schools inspector. She was very nice and came to visit all the classes. We all did a great job, because, we will be receiving our Green Flag in June! A big thanks to Mrs. O’ Grady, the Green School committee, and especially our caretaker Michael who read the meters and oil tank levels for us. Well done everybody!
