This week, November 12th – 19th is Science week in Ireland. Our class did lots of fun science experiments this week.

We saw that a candle would quench if it was covered with an upside down jar. The air was used up and the candle had to quench.

We looked at plastic and saw that it was made up of many pieces that can be stretched. We managed to put a chicken skewer through a balloon without making it pop. The molecules of the balloon stretched around the chicken skewer to keep the air inside.  We did the same with a zip lock bag, filled it with water, and then stuck lots of pencils through it. The water didn’t leak out as the plastic stretched around the pencils to keep the water sealed in the bag.

We looked at air pressure. Air spreads evenly over the area in which people are, in a room or wherever. However, air can be forced into small areas, like lots of air into a balloon. When the balloon is left go, the air rushes out  and spreads itself out evenly around the room. In  tyres with lots of air forced into them, the air keeps heavy trucks and cranes up. The wheels don’t go flat unless there is a hole in the tyre.

We then showed children the power of air. Children stood on an upside table that had balloons under it. We had 7 balloons under the table, and when the 10th person stood on the table two balloons burst. It was good fun.

Then we looked at the shape of eggs. Even though the egg shell is very weak, its shape makes it very strong. Many pupils tried to squeeze an egg to burst it but failed. Then we even walked on the eggs and to our amazement, the eggs didn’t even crack.

We did a few more experiments. Have a look at our photo’s below. We really enjoyed science week.
